Describe the technical aspects of the piano that allowed it to be an ideal Romantic instrument.

What will be an ideal response?

The piano had many attributes that earlier keyboard instruments did not. Most of these features allowed the performer to create a much more emotional performance, which was very fitting for Romantic-era music. For example, pianos could produce a much louder sound than harpsichords and other earlier keyboards. Depressing the "soft" pedal (on the left) created not only a softer sound but a different tone quality. The sostenuto pedal helped the performer to sustain some notes while cleanly playing others above them. The pedal to the right helped to sustain tones, which permitted smooth, legato passages as well as an accumulative tonal effect. All together, the piano was much suited to the emotional expression of the Romantic era.
