What are mandatory minimum sentences?
What will be an ideal response?
• Mandatory minimum sentences require that for certain crimes (e.g., violent crimes, crimes using a gun, distribution of narcotics) or for certain types of offenders (e.g., habitual criminals, sexual predators) there must be a sentence to prison for a set minimum term. The sentencing judge may not impose a sentence of probation, assess a fine, or suspend the prison sentence.
