The definition of a paralegal is not set in stone and can vary depending upon which entity is defining it. Detail the various definitions in your textbook; include the entity that uses each definition. Which definition do you think accurately portrays the profession?

What will be an ideal response?

The ABA defines paralegal as “a person qualified by education, training or work experience who is employed or retained by a lawyer” and “who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which the lawyer is responsible.” The NALA define paralegal as “persons who assist attorneys in the delivery of legal services” and as having knowledge regarding the legal system and “procedural law which qualify them to do work of legal nature under the supervision of an attorney.” The NFPA dines paralegal as a person qualified through education and experience to “perform substantive legal work that requires knowledge of legal concepts and is customarily, but not exclusively, performed by a lawyer” and may be retained to perform this work. The NALS defines paralegal as a person qualified by education or work experience “who is retained or employed by a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental agency or other entity and who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which the lawyer is responsible.” The AAfPE defines paralegal as a person who performs “substantive and procedural legal work authorized by law” and “have knowledge of the law gained through education and work experience, which qualifies them to perform legal work.” While all the definitions are similar to each other, I believe the definition provided by the ABA or the NALS most accurately portrays the profession and duties of a paralegal.
