Discuss the four phases of identity formation, as presented by Marcia. Make sure that you list each phase and comment on what is likely to happen in that phase

What will be an ideal response?

Table 9.1 presents the four phases of Marcia's theory of identity statuses.

(a) Identity Diffusion – During this status, a person may become overwhelmed by the various options that are before them, and will take little or no action to make a choice or accomplish a task.
(b) Identity Foreclosure – In this status, some adult(s) (often the parents) have made the decision on a course of action for the adolescent rather than allowing for independent exploration. An example may be when a parent dictates to their teenager what college they will go to or what career they will pursue.
(c) Identity Moratorium – In this status, the individual is actively exploring a number of different options, but has yet to commit to a specific course of action. An example might be a college student who is taking a variety of different courses but has not yet chosen a major field of study.
(d) Identity Achievement – In this status the individual has explored a variety of options and as a result of that exploration has made a commitment to a specific choice or path.
