Explain the difference between "literal" and "proportionate" versions of the retributive view of punishment

What will be an ideal response?

ANS:
Everyone who accepts the retributive view of punishment believes that wrongdoers must be punished in ways that "fit" their crimes. On a literal retributivism, we should do to criminals precisely the same things they have done to others. On proportional retributivism, what matters is simply that the punishment imposed is on a par with the crime that was committed.
