One algorithm is called the long-form or low-stress algorithm. In this algorithm, students write out the complete answer every time they multiply. Because of this, renaming is not required. Students then add the products to find the answer. The disadvantages of this algorithm are its limited acceptance in U.S. schools and the number of partial products that must be added to find the answer. The other algorithm is called the short-form algorithm. This algorithm requires mastery of basic multiplication facts, renaming, and complex addition facts. The advantages of the short-form algorithm are its relative efficiency in solving problems with multi-digit factors and its widespread use. Its disadvantages lie with the difficulty a student may have when alternating between addition and multiplication and with the inclusion of complex addition facts.
