According to the American College of Rheumatology, a person is classified as having SLE if four or
more of the following are present, serially or simultaneously, during any interval of observation:
• Malar rash- "butterfly rash"
• Discoid rash- raised red disc shaped patches
• Photosensitivity
• Mouth ulcers
• Arthritis: nonerosive, involvement of two or more joints, characterized by tenderness, swelling,
and effusion
• Serositis: pleuritis or pericarditis
• Renal disorder: persistent proteinuria or casts in urine
• Neurologic disorder: seizures or psychosis
• Hematologic disorder: hemolytic anemia, leukopenia, lymphopenia, or thrombocytopenia
• Immunologic disorder: anti-DNA or anti-Sm or positive phospholipid antibodies
• Abnormal antinuclear antibody
