Hypersexuality refers to an excessive, insatiable sex drive in either a man or woman. It leads to compulsive behaviors where a person feels driven to the act even when there may be very negative consequences. A study of male patients with paraphilia or related disorders focused on creating an operational definition of hypersexuality. The results supported the use of the criterion of seven or more orgasms per week for a minimum duration of six months. However, this criterion should not be applied to women because the propensity to experience orgasms varies widely among women. In fact, some women who have anorgasmia-or rarely or never experience orgasms-may be driven to compulsive sexual behavior by their condition. The opposite condition also exists, with some women who experience multiple orgasms in a single session, thus notching up more orgasms a week. One study of highly sexual women indicates that while these women reported a wide range in the preferred weekly frequency of sexual episodes, they reported an internal demand for sexual excitement and satisfaction that was too strong to ignore, and for many of them, this demand shaped their lives and influenced their relationships. This demand led to challenges in the areas of their feelings about themselves, their relationships with partners, and their relationships with female friends. Some of the women found it impossible to form a single relationship that could fulfill their needs, leading to multiple partners or the frequent forming of new relationships.
