Students should discuss how the colonial creation of Nigeria brought together diverse peoples and then served to solidify the identities of three main groups in different regions of the country. Political parties formed around these ethnic groups. Although these ethnic identities are socially constructed and modern, once they are politicized the divisions can be hard to contain. Despite the attempts to change political institutions to meet ethnic demands and create incentives for interethnic cooperation, political leaders have been able to easily mobilize along ethnic lines in an atmosphere of insecurity, economic inequality, and relative depravation.
