Describe the structure of the placenta. What parts are maternal and what parts are fetal?
What will be an ideal response?
The placenta consists of maternal and fetal tissue. Fetal tissue is present in the form of chorionic villi. These fetal blood vessels extend into the placenta where pools of free-flowing maternal blood flows around them. Fetal blood flowing in vessels of chorionic villi exchanges substances by diffusion with maternal blood around the villi.
