Assimilation is the process in which the cultural uniqueness of the minority is abandoned and its members try to blend invisibly into the dominant cultures. Accommodation is the process of partial or selective cultural change. Nondominant groups follow the norms, rules, and standards of the dominant culture only in specific circumstances and contexts. Acculturation is a mutual sharing of culture. It involves cultural modification of an individual, group, or people by adapting to or borrowing traits from another culture, a merging of cultures as a result of prolonged contact. Cultural groups remain distinct, but certain elements of culture change, and they exchange and blend preferences in foods, music, dance, clothing, and the like. Bicultural socialization involves a nonmajority group or its members mastering both the dominant culture and their own.
