Explain why lightweight building materials are preferred in earthquake-prone locations.
What will be an ideal response?
According to Newton's Second Law, the force that acts on an object is equal to the object's mass multiplied by the object's acceleration, i.e., F = m × a, where m = mass of the object and a = acceleration. Because the earthquake shaking causes acceleration in a building, the earthquake force so generated is directly related to the building'smass. The smaller the mass (i.e., weight), the smaller the earthquake force on it.
