Explain why Carol Gilligan believes that early adolescence is a critical juncture for females.

What will be an ideal response?

Gilligan says that in early adolescence (ages 11-12), girls become aware that the male-dominated culture does not value their intense interest in intimacy, even though society values women's caring and altruism. The dilemma is that girls are presented with a choice that makes them appear either selfish or selfless. As young adolescent girls struggle with this dilemma, they begin to silence their different voices, becoming less confident and more tentative in offering their opinions. Some researchers note that the self-doubt and ambivalence that girls experience in early adolescence can persist into adulthood and translate into depression and eating disorders.
