Psychotropic medications are the most frequently prescribed categories of psychoactive drugs. They include antipsychotic drugs, antidepressant drugs, and antianxiety drugs.
Antipsychotic drugs are prescribed to people suffering from a psychosis, to treat symptoms such as delusional thinking, hallucinations, and paranoia, which are commonly associated with schizophrenia.
Antidepressant drugs are used to treat symptoms associated with mood disorders-in particular, depression-but they may also be used to treat bipolar disorders, anxiety disorders, and other psychological problems associated with mood disturbances. The side effects of SSRIs are usually mild for most people and may include headaches, nausea, and dry mouth.
Antianxiety drugs are used to reduce fear, nervousness, and panic, which can be associated with generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and phobias. Unfortunately, these drugs are often physically addictive and may have severe side effects, especially if abused.
