Defend or refute a "communitarian" approach for the acquisition of human organs for transplants, where organs are routinely harvested unless a conscientious objection has been registered
The communitarian approach, which removes the individualization of who owns organs and places them instead into a valued scarce resource of the community, has appeal. This would shift the question of whether you would be willing to donate the organ and replace it with the societal expectation that the organ would be retrieved for use. Given our traditions, conscientious objectors status could be allowed to opt out of the process, just as some opt out of fighting in wars. This seems to be a system that would get us out of the great shortage of available organs as well as end the rather distasteful commoditization of body parts arguments, where organs are sold at the highest price. However, we are a nation of great traditions of individual rights, especially in areas of our own bodies, so moving to a communitarian standard would require a new consensus.
