How would you summarize the three major schemes used to group disabilities for the purpose of meeting educational needs?

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: Answers to this question will vary but should include elements of the following: (a) special education categories, (b) severity of the disability, and (c) high or low incidence. Special education categories encourage use of labels, of which there are 13. Severity of disability looks at severity of problems and how the condition affects individual performance. The four groupings of severity are mild, moderate, severe, and profound. Prevalence of disability refers to how often students are labeled with a certain disability. Low incidence means that students are not identified within that category very often. High incidence means that students are identified more frequently.
