There are four main categories of physical hazards that police officers face. First, incidents where officers are physically harmed and receive fatal injuries. These could be the result of an accident or be intentional, as in the case of a homicide. Second, incidents where officers are physically harmed, but the injuries sustained are not fatal. These may result from accidents, or be intentional, as in the case of an assault. Third, incidents where is a risk of harm to officer but no physical harm occurs. An example would be responding to a call of an armed suspect. Fourth, incidents that result in emotional or psychological harm to officers, like witnessing victims of serious crimes, traffic accidents, or being assaulted.
