Discuss the difficulties social workers may face in providing support services for an alleged abuser.

What will be an ideal response?

As a social worker, there may be countertransference toward the alleged abuser, making empathic connections difficult. However, if the caregiver does not have the capacity to provide the level of care required stress may increase. The social worker can help by locating services to help alleviate some of the responsibility and provide respite for the caregiver. Scheduling regular time out for the caregiver can be helpful. Spreading the caregiving responsibilities among other family members may also mitigate the problems that result in mistreatment of the older person.
