Discuss the rise of Oliver Cromwell.

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary. Cromwell first rose to prominence in the civil war on the Parlimentary side, then as a general who invaded Ireland in 1649, crushed a rebellion by massacring thousands, establishing Protestant rule, and deporting thousands as prisoners to English colonies. He then turned his attentions to royalist Scotland, from which he drove out Charles II. Cromwell then eventually established a military dictatorship in England, which he dominated until his death.
