Explain how the 'greenhouse effect' works (in relation to global warming)

What will be an ideal response?

Radiation from the sun comes through the atmosphere and warms the Earth's surface. Some of this radiation is reflected back into space. Radiation from the Earth is also emitted, though it is in longer wavelengths. Because of the presence of carbon dioxide, methane and water (which acts more like an amplifier), some of the radiation is reflected back onto the Earth's surface, acting like a thermal blanket in the atmosphere and thus warming the Earth's surface even more. Because of the increased amounts of these substances in the atmosphere, the balance that the Earth has had in the past is no longer present, resulting in an accelerated warming of the planet.
