How can a genogram contribute to understanding an individual’s presenting problem?

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: A genogram is a very detailed and powerful pictorial display of the client’s extended and immediate family members by generation. All important data about each member, such as significant events, mental and behavioral health issues, strengths, etc., can be presented. Some of this information is analyzed and summarized to contribute to appreciating the past and present circumstances that brought the client to the social worker. For example, if there was a suspected history of alcoholism in the family, the genogram can identify the members and raise the issue of potential addictive behaviors the client may be currently exhibiting.
