Kwashiorkor is a protein deficiency that makes children vulnerable to illness and death. Children with this condition may experience swollen bellies and thin, brittle hair. They are often lethargic and irritable. Another deficiency, that of iodine, is the most common micronutrient deficiency in the world. This leads to deficits in cognitive development. This is most common in Africa and South Asia, and even though adding iodine to foods is simple and cheap (in the form of iodized salt, for example), many children still lack this micronutrient.
