The metabolic equivalent (MET) is the energy cost of physical activity. One MET is equal to consuming 3.5ml of O2/kg/min or burning 1kcal/kg/min. MET values are used instead of other methods such as heart rate or absolute energy expenditure because the MET value of an activity is comparable across individuals of different body sizes.?
