When comparing body forms, it is easiest and hardest to compare similar organisms. When comparing such organisms, it is easier to figure out what to compare but the similarities might be too great. When comparing distant organisms, it is difficult to know what to compare. Both divergent and convergent evolution can also make it difficult to compare body forms. In the case of divergent evolution, closely related organisms might show vastly different body forms. In the case of convergent evolution, distantly related organisms might show very similar body forms. Comparing gene sequences appears to get around these problems.
