Describe the levels or stages of understandings involved in reading critically
What will be an ideal response?
ANSWERS 1. Preliminary understanding Skimming or lightly reading an article enables the reader to get a feel or a general sense of the content. The title and abstract are read carefully and introduce the reader to the main variables under review. Content, such as the introduction, major headings and one or two sentences under each heading, and the conclusion are skimmed. 2. Comprehensive understanding The purpose of this activity is to comprehend (understand) the parts (the main ideas or themes) of the study in relation to the whole; that is, show the relationship or connection of each part to the whole. 3. Analysis understanding To analyse is to break the content into essential features/sections in order to discover meaning. Examine how accurately the research study meets the criteria for each stage. You should be able to summarise each section into your own words and decide which level of evidence fits the study. 4. Synthesis understanding The process of combining the parts into a cohesive whole. At this stage determinations are made about how well the study met the criteria, its contribution to nursing and healthcare, and its practical utility. The strengths, weaknesses (limitations) and recommendations should be clear to the research consumer.
