Compare and contrast habituation and sensitization, and provide an example of each.

What will be an ideal response?

Habituation is the gradual decline in the strength of a response to some stimulus that has become familiar. Correct examples will describe a repeated stimulus that eventually no longer elicits a response from the human or animal. For instance, we eventually don't notice the coolness of the water in a swimming pool after we have been in the water for a period of time, and we eventually won't notice the sound of a fan in a room we have entered. Sensitization is the opposite of habituation, in that it is an increase in response to stimuli that seem dangerous or threatening. Examples should include the elements of perception of danger and increased sensitivity. For instance, a person who has had lightning and thunder crash very near them will jump and overreact to future sounds of thunder.
