What is tracking, and what are the criticisms of tracking?
What will be an ideal response?
Between-class ability grouping (tracking) consists of grouping students based on their ability or achievement. Tracking has long been used in schools as a way to organize students, especially at the secondary level. The positive view of tracking is that it narrows the range of skill in a group of students, making it easier to teach them. Tracking is said to prevent less-able students from "holding back" more talented students. Critics of tracking argue that it stigmatizes students who are consigned to low-track classes. For example, students can get labeled as "low-track" or "the dummy group." Critics also say that low-track classrooms often have less experienced teachers, fewer resources, and lower expectations. Further, critics stress that tracking is used to segregate students according to ethnicity and socioeconomic status because higher tracks have fewer students from ethnic minority and impoverished backgrounds. In this way, tracking can actually replay segregation within schools. The detractors of tracking also argue that average and above-average students do not get substantial benefits from being grouped together.
