Plessy vs. Ferguson – separate but equal accommodations for Blacks and Whites were not discriminatory, but necessary because of different needs of the races. Examples: separate neighborhoods, businesses, sections on busses and in restaurants, separate schools and colleges, separate washrooms and drinking fountains. Problem: "separate but equal" usually meant "inferior," with blacks sitting on the back of the bus or black schools having fewer resources than white schools. Brown vs. the Board of Education – reversed Plessy – Separate but equal wasn't equal, and was replaced by legal integration, such as integrated schools and restaurants. Nonetheless, most people still life in same-race neighborhoods.
