Discuss how neighborhood characteristics influence discretionary decisions made by police officers.
What will be an ideal response?
Neighborhood characteristics, that is, the neighborhood, area, or beat that an officer works, play a role in influencing officer decisions. Generally speaking, arrests, use of force, traffic stops, traffic citations, and field interviews are more likely to occur in low-income neighborhoods. That being said, the police may choose to ignore rather minor offenses in some areas, instead focusing on more serious offenses. Those same low-level offenses may lead to arrests or citations in other areas.
