A symptom of diabetes mellitus is polydipsia, or excessive thirst. Why does this occur?

When hyperglycemia occurs, the glucose cannot enter the cells and accumulates in the blood. The body draws water from the cells to the blood in an attempt to equalize the concentration. The loss of the cellular fluid causes the client to experience polydipsia.
