Compare and contrast the five types of social movements discussed in the text. Provide an example for each type. Which type of social movement do you think is most effective in reducing or eliminating social problems? Why?

What will be an ideal response?

• Reform: seek to improve society by changing some specific aspect of the social structure. Environmental groups and disability rights groups are examples of groups that seek to change (reform) some specific aspect of the social structure
• Revolutionary: seek to bring about a total change in society. Examples of revolutionary movements include utopian groups and radical terrorist groups that use fear tactics to intimidate and gain—at least briefly—concessions from those with whom they disagree ideologically.
• Religious: (also referred to as expressive movements) seek to renovate or renew people through inner change.
• Alternative: seek limited change in some aspects of people’s behavior. An example is MADD—Mothers Against Drunk Driving—an organization that specifically targets drunk driving and those who engage in such harmful behavior.
• Resistance: seek to prevent change or undo change that has already occurred
