Even under the best of circumstances, self-referral is a suspect practice. If it is done, it should be made known to the patient so that she can make an informed choice. Some research has shown self-referral to lead to increased usage and costs. A practitioner who changes his way of practice through any other motive than patient benefit has embarked on a slippery slope of compromised ethics.
