The strategic planner assists line executives in their planning efforts. The corporate strategic planner works closely with the chief executive officer; the SBU planner works with the strategic business unit executive. Their roles differ in orientation in the same way that the orientation of the chief executive officer and the SBU executive differ. In both cases, the planner conceptualizes the planning process and helps in translating its scope to line executives, who actually do the planning.
