Why did the seat of power of the Roman Empire shift to the east?
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. After Constantine moved the capital to Constantinople in 320, the eastern seat of power continued to appoint representatives to the western capital of Rome, despite its decline in status and wealth. The eastern part of the empire was easier to defend; had a larger population and a better economy; and, in the opinion of many, a better culture. Resources were distributed in greater amounts to the east than the west. The empire in the west became harder to maintain because of the pressures exerted by tribes north of the Danube. By gradually relocating the military defenses further and further east, the empire was tacitly admitting that the west was a lost cause, perhaps most significantly with the abandonment of Britain.
