Describe three characteristics of a self-managed team and explain how this strategy contributes to business success.

What will be an ideal response?

A typical self-managed team consists of 5 to 15 employees who produce an entire product instead of just parts of it. Team members learn all tasks and move from job to job. The resulting flexible workforce contributes to efficiency as members can fill in for coworkers. Team members also assume responsibility for tasks usually done by first-line managers (for example, hiring, scheduling, ordering materials) and this added autonomy and empowerment increase productivity.
