Myoelectric limbs—artificial limbs containing motors and responding to the electrical signals transmitted by the residual limb to electrodes mounted in the socket—predate computers. However, computer-related research has improved myoelectric limbs and had an immense impact on prosthetics in general. Developments related to computers include the tiny circuitry used by the sensors that receive the electrical signals and the motors that move the limb, the use of computers in the design and manufacture of limbs, and the improvement of the sensors used in prostheses.
Today, microprocessors can be embedded in a prosthetic limb and make the limb more useful and flexible. Sensors are attached to muscles in the residual limb. The patient must be able to control these muscles. Contracting the muscles generates electrical impulses. A microprocessor processes and amplifies the electrical impulses, sending them as control signals to the prosthesis. The microprocessor controls the tiny motor that moves the artificial limb.
