Explain how custodial staff can affect inmates and why correctional facilities need to pay more attention to this issue
What will be an ideal response?
While treatment and administrative personnel spend only limited amounts of time with inmates, custodial staff members are with inmates full-time. The words or actions of a single custody officer can damage or destroy months of treatment and counseling efforts. Currently, correctional academies frequently teach incoming correctional officers that inmates are not to be trusted, that they are dangerous, and that they may be "less than human." This may significantly and negatively affect how these officers interact with inmates.
