Describe and discuss the early atmosphere of Earth? What was its most likely composition?

How was it different from the present atmosphere? Why? What will be an ideal response?

The student should recognize that the early atmosphere of Earth formed by outgassing. Archean
volcanoes probably emitted water vapor, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide,
sulfur, etc. There was very little free oxygen. The present-day atmosphere has changed in a
variety of ways, probably most profoundly by the release of oxygen gas by photosynthetic
organisms.
