Compare mammal eyes specialized for daytime vision versus specialized for nighttime vision
What will be an ideal response?
The rods of mammals are much more sensitive than cones to low-intensity light. Rods can respond to a
single photon of light. Therefore, mammals with eyes specialized for nighttime vision have retinas
containing mostly rods. In mammals with eyes specialized for daytime vision, cones are concentrated
in and around a small region of the retina called the fovea. The fovea is lacking in mammals with
specialized nighttime vision. In mammals with specialized daytime vision the image focused by the
lens is centered on the fovea. Rods are spread over the remainder of the retina.
