What is contingency theory and what assumptions do contingency theorists make about organizational design?

What will be an ideal response?

An acceptable answer recognizes that there is no one best way of organizing. A good answer knows that contingency theory emerged from Burns & Stalker and Woodward, and was developed by the Aston School. A superior answer can relate the methods used to generate the concept of organization structure to those that were used to develop personality structure and will recognize that the contingencies relevant in the past may not apply in the future.
