Younger children under the age of 1 year are at the highest risk for child maltreatment. Children who are born premature, have a low birth weight, or are difficult to comfort are also at higher risk. Similarly, those with chronic health conditions are also at higher risk. Research shows that children exposed to maltreatment at young ages may experience cognitive impairments. Children who have been maltreated are more likely to struggle academically, they are also likely to manifest PTSD symptoms. Child maltreatment may inhibit social and emotional skill development. Additionally, substance use and abuse and criminal behavior are more common among maltreated children.
