Bipolar disorder is characterized by recurrent and extreme mood episodes referred to as mania and depression. Mania includes an atypically elevated mood with episodes of euphoria, increased activity, self-confidence, racing thoughts, decreased need for sleep, irritability, and an exaggerated sense of strength. Depression includes the same symptoms as described in the previous section. In youth, mania is often experienced as irritability.
