Name and discuss some of the early intervention programs and their benefits and limitations. If you had to choose one, which would you select and why?
What will be an ideal response?
The text mentions Project Head Start, the Abecedarian Project, and the High/Scope Perry Preschool program. All
are designed to provide early educational opportunities for at-risk (typically poor) children.
(1) There seem to be early IQ benefits that "fade away."( 2) They do lead to higher scores on math and reading tests,
but these differences fade in time, too.( 3) The children in these programs show other social and health benefits,
such as being less likely to be arrested or to receive welfare, and more likely to be employed, immunized, and
employed in a better-paying job.( 4) Also, the parents in some of these programs tend to be more emotionally
supportive, to spank less, and read to their children more.
Students' responses to the second part of this essay question will vary.
