Briefly describe the differences between formal thought and post-formal thought.
What will be an ideal response?
Formal operational thought is a way of conceiving abstract concepts and thinking about them in a very systematic way. It is governed by generalized logical structure that provides solutions to problems that people have never seen and may never encounter. Formal operational thinking can be applied to real or imaginary situations and is not bound by the limits of reality. Post-formal thought is characterized by recognition that truth (the correct answer) varies from situation to situation, that solutions must be realistic to be reasonable, that ambiguity and contradiction are the rule rather than the exception, and that emotion and subjective factors usually play a role in thinking.
