What are the differences in challenges that stepfathers and stepmothers face in their
relationship with stepchildren? Why do those differences exist?
What will be an ideal response?
Both stepfather and stepmother may face a role ambiguity where each is uncertain of what role they should play, especially at the beginning of a new marriage. Stepfathers often face the challenge of disciplining stepchildren. Fathers tend to feel the need to be recognized by their stepchildren and establish their identity as the father figure. Stepmothers tend to have a harder time raising stepchildren, greater dissatisfaction with their new family roles, and higher levels of stress than stepfathers. One explanation for this may be that stepmothers often have the responsibility of daily care and management for the children. Therefore, conflicts arising from routine decision making can make them "unpopular" with the children.
