Describe the three major types of skeletal muscle fibers found in vertebrates. What will be an ideal response?
Three major types of skeletal muscle fibers have been identified in vertebrates: slowoxidative,
fast-oxidative, and fast-glycolytic fibers (TABLE 40-1).
Slow-oxidative fibers are well adapted for endurance activities such as swimming and
running long distances and for maintaining posture. They contract slowly and fatigue slowly.
Fast-oxidative fibers contract rapidly and have an intermediate rate of fatigue.
Fast-glycolytic fibers generate a great deal of power and carry out rapid movements but can
sustain that activity for only a short time. They are important in activities such as sprinting
and weight lifting
