Describe compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma. How does this relate to burnout for counselors?

What will be an ideal response?

Compassion fatigue is described as adverse emotional, spiritual, cognitive, and physical reactions associated with providing care to clients that are not transient, supersede interpersonal stamina, and are associated with undesired changes in functioning. Vicarious trauma is a change in how therapists think, feel, and behave in relation to others and themselves as a result of their exposure to and empathic bonding with their clients’ traumatic material. If counselors do not maintain personal wellness through self-care activities, they are at risk for experiencing compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma. This can lead to burnout.
