Mobile data services started in the mid-1980s and, have gone through a dizzying number of standards and protocols, all of which have been revised, improved, abandoned, and reworked. Instead of trying to advertise these fairly complex and intimidating technologies, the industry instead came up with the marketing term generations, abbreviated by a number followed by the letter G: 2G, 3G, and 4G.
