Compare the sometimes conflicting historical goals that motivated the establishment and design of American city parks
What will be an ideal response?
American city parks were originally modeled on the western European parks and formal gardens meant to bring an experience of beauty, relaxation and intimacy. New York's Central Park, designed by Frederick Olmstead, is one example of this vision still in use today. On the other hand, parks were needed to alleviate congestion and allow some escape for the many poverty-stricken immigrants who lived in America's cities at the time. These park users were more interested in active recreation, such as ball games, rather than in carriage rides and formal landscaping. In an ecological sense, parks preserve portions of original ecosystems and their services, support wildlife and offer city dwellers of all backgrounds the chance to experience nature and satisfy our biophilia.
