Describe the early transition from an indigenous culture to a diverse one in the United States and the associated diversity issues up through the early 1900s.
What will be an ideal response?
European colonists immigrated to the United States, disrupting and destroying
indigenous populations and exerting dominance over colonized parts of the Americas. Further increases in diversity were fueled by European immigration and the forced transport and enslavement of African peoples. Much of the dynamics of the working life and treatment of various peoples was defined by social group relativism in which groups with like characteristics--such as Caucasian males--gave preference to those of their own group in hiring and membership decisions. Caucasian males continued to dominate these decisions through the 1900s, and divisions within that group did likewise with members of their own nationalities or ethnic groups.
